Urban Politics Forum

Designing the Social Condenser in Tung Chung

Date: 21st of April 2023

Time: 4 – 6 pm Location: Lee Shau Kee Architecture Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Led by: Prof. Inge Goudsmit, Coordinator of Year 4 BSSc Architectural Studies

Alongside other relevant stakeholders: cultural practitioners, local NGOs, urban planners, and academics, ‘The Urban Politics Forum’ led by Prof Inge Goudsmit explores the urgent cultural infrastructural gap in our New Towns of Hong Kong – especially in Tung Chung. To meet housing demands, new urban development often focus on planning for residential buildings, while they fall short of good cultural buildings – The Social Condenser.

For the first hour of the Forum, eight students from our BSSc Year 4 Architectural Studies program will present their final architectural design proposals of speculative Art and Cultural venues and programmes in different sites in Tung Chung. The second hour is when the forum truly begins: a table of relevant stakeholders will begin sharing their impressions and views on cultural infrastructure, the architectural proposals, and policy in the context of Tung Chung, Hong Kong. In the backdrop of the event is an exhibition of fifty projects of the BSSc Year 4 Architectural Studies students for all to peruse.
